Introduction
Today’s topic is “how to change drive letter”. There are some circumstances that may have you changing a drive letter, today I had to do just that due to a hard drive not showing up on a machine.
How to change drive letter
Disk Management
First up you want to right click your ‘Start Menu‘ and click on ‘Disk Management‘.
In ‘Disk Management‘ you want to find the drive you want to change, in this case I will use this SD card I have plugged in, ‘Right Click‘ it and select ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths…‘.
Change the letter of a drive
You want to highlight the drives letter, here it’s ‘F:’ and then click on ‘Change…‘
Note
Remember this drive letter in case there’s any issues later on so you can revert back to it.
Choosing the drive letter
You’ll then be presented with this window, you need to simply click the drop down and choose your drive letter, make sure it’s not in use by anything else otherwise it will stop that device working and cause issues, e.g. a secondary hard drive if you have one.
You’ll be shown this confirmation message, decide if you want to continue. If you find the alteration you’ve made causes issues you can simply follow the same process and set it to the old drive letter, this should then rectify any issues caused by it.
